Explore the world of Web 2.0

By: Thomas LaBadia

Web 2.0 is really one of the most misunderstood terms floating around the Internet at the moment.

We have had a wide variety of questions and comments related to Web 2.0. Things like

• Do I have to go somewhere to download this new version of the internet?

• Does my website have the 2.0 already installed?

• Is Web 2.0 a product offered by Google?

• Can you design my website in Web 2.0 colors?

The answer to all of the above questions is NO. Web 2.0 certainly is not a brand new version of the Internet, something you can install, a part of the google offers or a certain selection of colors and styles in web design. Fundamentally, its really utilizing existing technologies to benefit people. Its a movement away from static content and towards interaction with people.

To simplify Web 2.0 is all about interaction. Ultimate Interactivity.

As business entities embrace the web as a platform and move towards using its many strengths, they can then build their services and applications using the unique features of the internet as opposed to just building applications to suite other platforms.

Giving people the opportunity to upload, download, share and connect in unique ways.

Examples of Web 2.0

Tim OReilly, the founder of ORielly Media, sums it up by saying that Web 2.0 has a layered approach to the levels of interaction with users.

• Level 3 applications are the most web 2.0 oriented and they only exist on the internet. They drive their effectives through human interaction and from the networking effects that web 2.0 makes possible and they grow in effectiveness as more and more people use them. Some examples of level 3 applications are: amazon.com, ebay.com, craigslist.com del.icio.us, dodgeball and Adsense.

• Level 2 applications can operate offline, but can greatly benefit from going online. OReilly cited Flickr, which greatly benefits from its shared photo database and from its community generated tag database.

• Level 1 application operate offline, but gain features online. A few good examples of this are Google Docs & Spreadsheets as well as iTunes because of its store approach.

• Level 0 applications work as well offline as online. OReilly gives the examples of MapQuest, Yahoo Local and Google maps.

Misconceptions

To add even more confusion to the mix, its important to notice that a variety of website design effects have also been referred to as being Web 2.0. For example, rounded corners and drop shadows are two often used elements used and described as being Web 2.0. The problem with that is that rounded corners and drop shadows certainly do not encourage interactivity. When was the last time you had a drop shadow ask you for your opinion? If you are having conversations with rounded corners then you should probably be reading a totally different article entirely.

Perhaps, this misconception of Web 2.0 as being a style is related to AJAX technology (AJAX allows a web page to request an update for parts of its content, and then to alter those parts in your web browser without needed to refresh the whole page each time) and also DHTML (often found in drop down menus.) While these fantastic technologies will allow a designer to create user friendly websites that work extremely well with a Web 2.0 application, they are certainly not required.

Web 2.0 sites often do have a certain user friendly look and feel, so its very easy to see how someone could understand web 2.0 to be a style.

What Can You Plug In?

We briefly touched upon the term AJAX as one way to provide a better user experience.Flash, the new Flex from Adobe and Java have all evolved to improve user interaction in browser based applications. Other technologies such as

Although it may not always be apparent, these technologies are surrounding you every time you open up your web browser. Some other technologies are:

• XML and RSS feeds: These provide your customers with a syndicated version of your pushed content. This convenient technology allows the consumer to pullpush the technology they want you to be aware of to you. data from anyone you decide you want to receive regular information from and for others to

• Mashups: A mashup is a hybrid tool that flows out of RSS. Essentially a mashup is a web application that combines data from more than one source into a single integrated tool. There are numerous tools available that allow your web site to pull in 3rd party RSS feeds, filter them based on your unique specifications and criteria and then display the information within your website.

o Another great example is the use of cartographic data from Google Maps to add location information to real-estate data, thereby creating a new and distinct web service.

• Weblog (Blog): These are publishing tools, as well as WIKI and forum software designed to support user generated content that includes user commenting, encouraging back and forth interaction.

• Social Indexing: Also known as tagging or social classification, this is now the default method to annotate and categorize content. It is typical to see hyperlinked words in blog articles. Tagging information is intended to make volumes of information easier to discover, search and navigate over time. This results in ultimate usability and allows people to find related content quickly and easily.

It is easy to see the interactive pattern here and the connection of people to people defines what Web 2.0 really is and why it is important to you.

Steps to make your website more Useable and Accessable.

By: Marcelo Maglahus

1.Content is Valuable To get your website listed appropriately to SE's, the content of your website needs to listed between the tags. Your target keywords must be present in the Meta Title, Meta Description and Meta Keyword, in this way it gets read by the search engines if which keywords specifically your targetting into. Your content also needs to be unique and get your point across. What is your product or service that is better and different from other competitors.

2.Effective Meta Title,Description and your keywords. The two most important tags when it comes to referencing your page content is the Meta Title and Meta Description. Make a research first on what keywords you are using, try to check the number of search volumes per month.

3.Proper Coding. Web standards have changed substantially over the years and it is important to make sure your pages is validated with both html and CSS.

4.Make sure content is well formated. Well formatted contents makes your page more accessible to visitors and also for the search engines. Visitors often do scan across your page rather than read it so make it sense to format your page, so it can be browsed yet still delivers the message.

  1. Dont implement your site in Full Flash. Yes, your site might look neat and clean but have you thought about the Search Engines that about to visit your site? Flash creates major problems in getting into proper indexing. There is no way Search Engines can extract content from your website as it all contained with in the SWF. But if you like flash that much just make it sure that you have a HTML version of your site as well.

  2. Create a good ambience on your color schemes. You need to make sure you don't have any extreme contrasts between colors and that you don't use really bright colors as they are quite hard on the eyes. Your logo should be in a clearly displayed place on the homepage and in more than one place.

  3. Offer a Newsletter. A great way to generate returning visitors is to offer a newsletter. In this way you can direct marketing to people who are interested in your products or service. Also to keep them inform what is your latest products and services you offer.

Websites crucial to customer buying decision, retention, interaction

Survey finds lack of web site can drive customers elsewhere

PHILADELPHIA, Mar 29 ; 1&1 Internet, Inc. (1&1), the world’s largest Web-hosting company, today announced the results of it's latest survey.

In an age when consumer loyalty can make or break a business, a recent survey found that securing and retaining customers can be as easy as providing a comprehensive Web site.

Commissioned by 1&1 Internet, Inc. (1&1), the world’s largest Web-hosting company, the survey of 520 U.S. households, revealed that a Web site improves interaction between consumers and businesses, and lack of a Web site could drive business away.

More than one-third of respondents (36 percent) agreed that lack of a web site would lead them to shop elsewhere or select an alternative business, while 28 percent agreed that they would have “doubts or reservations buying from a business without a Web site.” In addition, an overwhelming number of respondents (76 percent) felt it was easiest to contact a business via a phone number or e-mail address provided online.

“Web sites provide a link between consumers and their retail experiences,” said Andreas Gauger, Chairman, 1&1. “Providing an online service is essential to keep consumers happy and loyal.”

Can You Grow Your Wealth With a Home Based Business

The answer to this question is a definite YES! I have lots of business associates in the USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand who are working in a home based business and making thousands of dollars each month. In fact the woman who introduced me to my home based business is only 25 years of age and she made over $500,000 in her first 12 months of her business.

I am now duplicating her results, but please read on and you will learn about what I have achived and experienced in 3 very different situations and how in the end I succeeded in taking control of my future.

My Traditional Business Experience
I used to own and manage a very lucrative and high profile restaurant and bar in Brisbane, Queensland for a period of over 12 years. I started it from scratch and like most traditional businesses it was really expensive to set up and the running costs were enormous.

Although I made a lot of money with this business, I finally decided to offload it when I came to realise that the long hours and constant stress of managing over 30 employees, dealing with various government requirements, endless paper work and hundreds of customers per week was absolutely destroying my life.

You can become rich with a standard business but you will need to be extremely committed as you won’t be able to walk out and close the door anytime you want. There will be lots of work to do and deadlines to meet, customers to please and more than likely, staff to hire and mentor unless you want to do all the work yourself. The hours are generally very long and in most cases the business can end up being your life. Another point to consider is that you’ll be on your own to work things out and solve any problems as they arise.

My Job Experience
After selling the business, I decided that a job would be a better alternative to being in business so I set about finding one and little did I know what I was in for! I spent 8 hours a day scouring the employment classifieds, networking, perfecting my resume and attending interviews for jobs I didn’t even want. I felt undervalued and demoralised and almost gave up hope before I finally landed a job with a firm as an Events Manager.

All good you might well think, but unfortunately this was not the case as now I was into something that would cost me 12 hours of my time, 5 days a week as I got dressed up for work, traveled to and from work and actually did the work. I was working under considerable stress and was totally stressed out by having to answer to a boss and co-ordinate every single element of each event from travel and accommodation arrangements, key note speakers, entertainment and right down to sorting out what type of lettuce should go on the dinner plates of the attendees. What a nightmare! But the thing that annoyed me the most was that I was doing all of this to make my boss richer while I had to settle for a small pay packet at the end of each week. JOB = Just over broke.

My Home Business Experience
As you might have guessed, I didn’t stay in my job as an Event Manager for long. I had spent seven months of my life trying to find the right career and after only 1 month I resigned.

I had no idea what to try next but I was determined to find something that would tick ALL the boxes for me and knew that I first needed to get very clear about what I really wanted.

I did not want to:
Own and manage a stressful, traditional type of business
Outlay a lot of money to get started in a new business
Answer to a boss and have to beg for time off work

I did want to
Earn a lot of money
Work from home
Take control of my future

With the above in mind, I spent the next couple of months researching my options until I was eventually attracted to an advertisement (placed by a 25 year old lady) about a home based business opportunity. I must admit that I was pretty hesitant to begin with but I decided I had nothing to lose by finding out more so I answered the ad and within 1 week I was up and running with my very own home based business.

On my best day so far, I earned five thousand dollars but what I really love about my home business most is that I actually took back control of my own life. I now work the hours I choose, from the comfort of home or anywhere I like really with my laptop and phone. I don’t have to juggle and manage staff anymore and gone is all the stress. I fit my work around my life, generally about 25 hours per week and I absolutely love what I do.

It’s not for everyone however and if you are considering getting started in a home business you should ask yourself the following important questions:

1. Is the business aligned with your income and lifestyle goals?
2. Do you have some money and time to invest into the business?
3. Can you work diligently as your own boss and without supervision?
4. Will there be anyone to help or guide you if you get stuck along the way?

Yes! You can make money with home based businesses. Lots of money!
